Toyota vs The Competition

Toyota vs. Honda: Comparing SUVs, mid-size trucks and minivans

At Principle Toyota in Memphis, TN, we know Toyota and Honda make some of the most dependable, most highly-regarded vehicles in the world. Three of the categories that are most directly competitive for millions of consumers are compact SUVs, mid-size pickups and minivans. These also happen to be some of the most popular body styles in the automotive world. Here's a comparison of the Toyota RAV4 vs. the Honda CR-V, the Toyota Tacoma vs. the Honda Ridgeline mid-size pickups and the Toyota Sienna vs. the Honda Odyssey minivans. Although Honda makes some outstanding vehicles, we believe Toyota comes out ahead consistently and these comparisons will demonstrate that in key categories.

The Toyota RAV4 vs. the Honda CR-V

The Toyota RAV4 and the Honda CR-V are both extremely popular compact SUVs. Toyota immediately pulls into the lead by offering four different powertrain options, including two hybrid models, compared to the CR-V that gives you a choice of only two. In addition, the Toyota RAV4 gives you more horsepower across the lineup. The RAV4 has a range of 203 to 302 horsepower compared with only 190 to 192 horsepower for the CR-V. The RAV4 wins again when it comes to torque, giving you a maximum of 259 pound-feet vs. only 222 pound-feet for the Honda CR-V.

The Toyota RAV4 wins in the all important category of fuel efficiency, giving you up to 41 combined city/highway MPG on the highway for its gasoline-powered model vs. only 34 combined MPG for the Honda gas-powered CR-V. The RAV4 has more ground clearance with 8.4 inches compared with only 7.5 inches for the CR-V. The RAV4 also comes out ahead when it comes to maximum towing capacity, giving you 3500 pounds compared with only 1500 pounds for the CR-V. With all those wins, it's easy to see why the Toyota RAV4 wins the popularity contest, coming in as the best-selling SUV in the country, beating the CR-V and all other competition.

The Toyota Tacoma vs. the Honda Ridgeline

When it comes to midsize pickups, Toyota and Honda square off again with two first-rate choices: the Toyota Tacoma and the Honda Ridgeline. Both offer capable 3.5-liter V6 engines but the Tacoma edges out the Honda Ridgeline with a little more torque. The Tacoma also wins in the crucial area of maximum towing capacity with 6800 pounds for the Tacoma compared with only 5000 pounds for the Ridgeline.

Toyota wins again with more maximum payload:1685 pounds compared with only 1583 pounds for the Ridgeline. The Tacoma offers both a 5-foot and 6-foot bed length while the Ridgeline offers only a 5.3-foot bed. The Tacoma comes out with another victory with 34.8 cubic feet of cargo capacity compared with only 33.9 cubic feet for the Ridgeline. Thus, it's no surprise that the Tacoma is the best-selling mid-size pickup and the Honda Ridgeline is following behind with the rest of the pack.

The Toyota Sienna vs. the Honda Odyssey

Minivans have been staging a remarkable surge in popularity among families all across America with both the Toyota Sienna and the Honda Odyssey attracting big followings. The Toyota Sienna delivers more overall value that starts with a lower initial selling price. In addition, the Sienna provides much greater fuel efficiency with a top combined city/highway rating of 39 MPG compared with only 28 MPG for the Honda Odyssey.

A comparison of overall brand reliability

Both Toyota and Honda have developed solid reputations for the dependable, long-lasting vehicles. But according to Consumer Reports annual Auto Reliability Survey, Toyota is the most reliable car brand in America while Honda had to settle for making the top ten. In addition, a national study showed that six of the ten longest-lasting cars were made by Toyota compared with only two models from Honda in the top 20.
